HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has confirmed a 45 per cent year-on-year increase in the number of online tax returns filed on Christmas Day.

It was revealed that 4,757 people found the time to file their 2022/23 online tax return during their Christmas Day festivities, compared with the 3,275 people who filed online on Christmas Day in 2022.

The busiest filing hour throughout Christmas Day was between 12:00 and 12:59 with 402 people submitting their completed return during this time.

This surprising number who submitted their tax returns on Christmas Day followed 8,876 individuals who submitted their tax returns online on Christmas Eve; a 5 per cent increase on the 8,474 returns received on Christmas Eve 2022.

The number of submissions received on Boxing Day also saw an increase with 12,136 returns; a 18 per cent increase on the 10,311 returns received on Boxing Day in 2022.

In total 25,769 online returns were received over the three-day period – a 17 per cent overall increase on the 2022 total of 22,060.
